In order to avoid evil spirits from enter the child, women gave birth crouching on birth bricks decorated in the Gods Hathor, Bes, and Taweret. It was also decorated with the Goddesses Meskheneth (she created the baby in the uterus), Hegat (chthonic frog goddess worshiped as Khnum’s female counterpart), and with other goddess they helped form the baby and protect it during delivery.

Even thought they believed in all these goddess, the mortality rate was quite high. It is said one in ten women died during childbirth. The mortality rate for infants was  high too as 30% were exposed to disease or were in an accident during their first year.
